Da Roger Waters i midten af 1977 åbenbarede sin fremtidige vision for bandet løst skitseret på baggrund af hans nylige oplevelse med at spytte en lidt for ivrig fan i hovedet var bandet med på idéen om at fjerne sig fra forgrunden og lade musikken tale på dens egne præmisser.
Så deres næste projekt skulle være en rock opera om musikeren Pink (som mange mener er løst baseret på både Syd Barrett & Roger Waters selv) og dennes tiltagende distancering fra sig selv som musiker og den snigende sindssyge og storhedsvanviddet der følger efter.
Resultatet var et kompromistløst album som blander traditionel rock, discobeats, og folkelige sange i et særdeles godt forløst mix, centreret omkring den faderløse rocksanger Pink (Mother og Empty Spaces) der efterhånden lukker sig inde i sig selv (Goodbye Cruel World og Comfortably Numb) for til sidst at ende som en facistoid karakter (In The Flesh og Run Like Hell), men som til slut nedbryder muren han har bygget op omkring sig selv (The Trial og Outside The Wall).
Pladen betragtes retteligt som et af musikhistoriens absolut største mesterværker, hvilket er fuldt fortjent set med nutidens optik, og pladens svimlende salg på mere end 35 millioner eksemplarer er kun slået af The Dark Side Of The Moon skiven.
Albummet er produceret af Bob Ezrin, Roger Waters & David Gilmour og byder bl.a. på Pink Floyds første reelle hitsingle Another Brick In The Wall Pt. 2, og den smukke & inciterende Comfortably Numb. Alt er remasteret af James Guthrie i 2011, ganske som de andre sæt.
Indholdet på Immersion boksen er udover den nye 2011 remaster, bl.a. en lang række aldrig hørte demoer og outtakes, samt 1980 live ur-opførelsen af pladen (Is There Anybody Out There?), og ikke mindst en DVD med en dokumentarfilm, livebidder og videoer samt en bog om albummet, sjældne fotos, replica billetter, 9 stk.ølbrikker, halstørklæde og marmorkugler.
