Deserter is the first new music in nearly four years from Mansions, a Seattle-based trio that consists of guitarist and vocalist Chris Browder, bassist Robin Dove and drummer John Momberg. Mansions' most recent full-length releases are 2011's Dig Up The Dead and 2013's Doom Loop, and the group worked with Bad Timing Records on a pressing of Dig Up The Dead Acoustic pushed to retailers in spring 2017. On Deserter, Browder recalls the honesty and intimacy in songwriting that has helped Mansions develop a cult-like fanbase. But he pushes himself sonically, writing a bulk of these six songs with a moody synthesizer rather than a guitar. "Heel Theme," with its pulsating peaks and valleys, embodies much of the fuzzed-out rock sound for which the band is known, but with a newly imbued anthemic quality. Meanwhile, "I Feel Worse" and "Brain Fog" open up an array of new layers and textures, making the closing "One Of Three"just Browder and an acoustic guitar resonate that much clearer.
